Event Details
Structured around several real people's experiences in different parts of Europe, this talk by Dr. Mirna Zakić considers how Jewish people concealed themselves physically from detection by the Nazis or attempted to conceal their Jewish identities. Dr. Zakić explores the physical and ethical challenges encountered by Jewish people and their non-Jewish allies during the Holocaust. How does one survive in long-term confinement and under the threat of death? What risks did non-Jewish allies take? How did the unequal relationship between the rescuer and the rescued affect these experiences?
Dr. Mirna Zakić is an Associate Professor of History at Ohio University. Her research interests include the relationship between ideology, war and society; and issues of occupation and collaboration. She is the author of Ethnic Germans and National Socialism in Yugoslavia in World War II and co-editor of German-Balkan Entangled Histories in the Twentieth Century.
This event supports the exhibit Anne Frank: A History for Today, on display at LCL's Downtown Newark location from November 11 - December 14. The exhibit is generously funded by the Licking County Foundation.
