Program Description

Event Details

Dr. Nikole Patson discusses language, a tool we use proficiently every day yet seldom pause to consider how it works. A remarkable feature of language is that speakers (or writers) can leave parts unsaid and our minds automatically fill the gaps. Discuss how this feature of language (and our minds) can lead to misinterpretation and how advertisers take advantage of it.

Dr. Patson, an Associate Professor of Psychology at The Ohio State University, specializes in adult language comprehension, particularly in how meaning is derived from linguistic content. Her research has been widely published in academic journals.

This free, virtual program is part of our lifelong learning series Empowered Minds. The focus of this signature service is healthy aging and enrichment for the retirement-age citizens of Licking County. All adults are welcome. Empowered Minds is supported by a sustaining gift from Robert Trimble Jr., a lifelong learner and, in part, by the Licking County Senior Levy. Donations are appreciated.
