Event Details
Dr. Paul Beck discusses partisan polarization in global politics. He reviews polarization cross-nationally and across time, drawing upon national surveys of the Comparative National Election Project in 51 elections between 1992 and 2020 around the world. He explores polarization sources—through protective echo chambers of interpersonal discussants and media, leadership influences, and unique features of particular elections and electoral systems. Finally, Dr. Beck addresses political consequences, including the threat to democracy posed by extreme polarization.
Professor Beck earned his PhD from the University of Michigan is currently Professor Emeritus and Academy Professor of Political Science at The Ohio State University and international co-coordinator of the Comparative National Elections Project. He is recipient of the Distinguished Scholar and Distinguished Service awards from The Ohio State University and the American Political Science Association’s Goodnow and Eldersveld awards for distinguished service. He served as the political science department chair for 19 years at two different universities, 13 at Ohio State, and as dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Ohio State.
